Veteran Tamil filmmaker and actor Bharathiraja, one of the most influential figures in Indian cinema, passed away in Chennai at the age of 85 following age-related health complications. His demise has left the film fraternity and millions of fans across the country mourning the loss of a visionary storyteller who transformed Tamil cinema with his realistic narratives and portrayal of rural life.
Widely regarded as a pioneer of Tamil filmmaking, Bharathiraja revolutionised the industry by taking cinema beyond studio sets and bringing authentic village landscapes, culture, and emotions to the big screen. His directorial debut, the acclaimed 16 Vayathinile (1977), marked a turning point in Tamil cinema and established him as a filmmaker with a unique voice and vision. Over the decades, he directed several memorable films and earned immense respect for his contribution to Indian cinema.
The news of his passing triggered an outpouring of tributes from actors, filmmakers, politicians, and fans. Actress and politician Khushbu Sundar expressed her grief on social media, calling Bharathiraja one of the industry's most beloved and respected directors. She wrote, “Devastated to know that our most beloved, loved and respected Director, the legendary #BharathiRaaja avl is no longer with us. His demise is a gloomy cloud in tamil cinema.”
Several prominent personalities remembered Bharathiraja as a mentor and inspiration. Tributes also poured in from members of the Tamil film industry, who acknowledged his immense influence on generations of filmmakers and actors.
Meanwhile, Vijay visited Bharathiraja’s residence in Chennai to pay his last respects and offer condolences to the bereaved family. As a mark of honour for his extraordinary contribution to cinema, the Tamil Nadu government announced that the legendary filmmaker would be accorded full state honours during his final rites.
Bharathiraja’s legacy will continue to live on through his timeless films, groundbreaking storytelling, and the countless artists he inspired. His passing marks the end of an era in Indian cinema.
